The Milestones - SEAMEO-RECFON


Establishment of SEAMEO

It has promoted cooperation among the Southeast Asian nations through education, science and culture. Until 2010, SEAMEO has 19 regional centers with different specialization.


SEAMEO-TROPMED Project was founded

Four centers were entrusted to carry out its programs for the promotion of human resource development, respectively in Nutrition (Indonesia), Parasitology and Entomology (Malaysia), Public Health (Philippines), and Tropical Medicine (Thailand).

In Indonesia, it is known as the National Center for Nutrition, which is hosted to University of Indonesia, Jakarta.

Late 1960s – early 1970s

The USA’s assistance during the Center’s preparation for its postgraduate diploma program in Applied Nutrition

The USA provided in kind and technical consultants services during the preparatory period and first years of establishment of the Center’s Regional Postgraduate Diploma Program in Applied Nutrition.


Postgraduate Diploma Program in Applied Nutrition was started

The program establishment formally pointed the Center’s participation in training and research activities for the region.


The Master of Science in Applied Nutrition program was started

Late 1970’s – mid 1980’s

The Netherlands’s assistance for the Center’s degree program

The assistances focused on the consolidation of the Master of Science program and in starting the Doctorate program through the assignment of a long term full time consultant


The Doctorate Degree program in nutrition was started

The educational research activities addressed nutrition issues under focus of attention such as Protein Energy Malnutrition, xerophthalmia, and anemia until the late 1980’s.  The researches were conducted by the degree program participants related to their degree training.

Late 1980’s – mid 1990’s

The Partnership Project between SEAMEO Centers and Canadian Lead Institutions through the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA)

The partnership led to a partnership between the Center with the University of Manitoba to strengthen teaching, research programs and service functions


Besides educational research, academic staff started to be actively engaged in research focused on micronutrients, nutrition and urbanization, nutrition and aging, and others

Early 1990

The Centre was placed under the coordination of the UI, and the Pusat Kajian Gizi Regional (PKGR) was established to carry out the Center’s activities,

1990 - 2000

The SEAMEO–TROPMED–GTZ Trophology Project was implemented the Government of Germany and SEAMEO agreed to jointly promote the SEAMEO-TROPMED Center for Nutrition with a view to intensify the post graduate training programs in the fields of human nutrition and adopt its contents and organization to requirements in the Southeast Asian Region.

As the assistance from Canada/CIDA Project was still on going, the two projects were arranged to complement one another


The theme of the Diploma Program was changed from Applied Nutrition to Community Nutrition


The theme of the Master of Science program was changed from Applied Nutrition to Community Nutrition


Field Research program and Short Courses were started

  • Field research program was organized for non-regular SEAMEO-TROPMED RCCN training program participants. The program (around 6 months) was mostly attended by participants from Europe. 
  • Short courses were offered as non-degree training, as the SEAMEO-TROPMED RCCN started to apply ‘block system’ for their courses (1 subject/course was offered within 1-3 weeks)


Collaboration Center(s) in Community Nutrition (CCCN) in training and research were formed.

The first collaboration was established between the Center and Andalas University/Provincial Health Office of West Sumatra.


Four National Centers of SEAMEO-TROPMED Project became Regional Centers

  • The coordinating office is in Bangkok, named the SEAMEO-TROPMED Network.
  • The Regional Center in Indonesia is known as SEAMEO-TROPMED Regional Center for Community Nutrition.


The 2nd CCCN was established with Hasanuddin University, South Sulawesi


The 3rd CCCN was established with Sam Ratulangi University, North Sulawesi


The Diploma program was no longer offered by the SEAMEO-TROPMED RCCN UI Indonesia


The 4th CCCN was established with the National Institute for Nutrition (NIN), Hanoi, Vietnam


MoU on collaboration with Brawijaya University, East Java was signed

The collaboration is for the opening and development of nutrition and health study program of the Medical Faculty Brawijaya University


Internal institutional strengthening of SEAMEO-TROPMED RCCN UI, particularly on human resources development and finance


Change of organizational status of SEAMEO-TROPMED RCCN UI within the SEAMEO, into SEAMEO RECFON


The endorsement of the SEAMEO RECFON in the 46th SEAMEO Council Conference 2011 at Brunei Darussalam.
