October 23, 2024 – In collaboration with SEAMEO RECFON, the Institute of Nutrition Mahidol University (INMU) Thailand hosted the ‘Capacity Building on Laboratory: An Apprenticeship Program’ on 7 – 17 October 2024, and was attended by 2 staff of SEAMEO RECFON (Manager of Laboratory and Consultancy Unit and Laboratory Analyst). This apprenticeship program aims to equip laboratory staff with the practical skills, theoretical knowledge, and professional capability required to excel in their roles to strengthen SEAMEO RECFON Laboratory services.
The laboratory plays a pivotal role in scientific research, healthcare, and various industries, serving as hubs for innovation and discovery. This aligns with SEAMEO RECFON Laboratory’s roles in supporting its Centre mandates on research, capacity building, education and training, information dissemination, partnership, and community development.
The program was held by implementing several coherent methods. The first method is mentorship and supervision, in which the apprentices were guided and facilitated with skills development, and overseen for progress. The second is practical experience, allowing the apprentices to have hands-on experience and actively participate in laboratory activities. The last one is evaluation and feedback.
Details of the activities are as follows:
- Folate analysis using microbiology method in food

- Folate analysis using LC-MS/MS in human serum

- Laboratory management system and its facility

- Method development and quality system

- Presentation on the follow-up action plans
